The Spiritual Minute: How would you split a bill among friends?
Conflict sometimes emerges when people don’t understand different money stories
Have you ever gone out to eat with a group of people and experienced a situation that, when the bill comes, there are different responses from different people?
One person might take the bill and say, “Let’s go ahead and split this up evenly.”
Another person might take the bill and say, “You know what, let’s pay each according to what they ate or drank.”
A third person might say, “You know what, that’s too much trouble. Let me go ahead and cover the whole bill,” and gives their credit card.
And another person might say, “You know what, that’s a great idea. Let that person cover the whole bill!”
You see, what each person is expressing, whether they realize it or not, are their individual money stories, those beliefs that they have that affect their relationship with money.
And there’s a lot of conflict that sometimes emerges when people can’t understand that people are coming from different money stories.
So, in this situation, who do you tend to be at that table?
And are you open to people expressing their money stories in different ways, different from you?
